As Adiana is returning home from Amaranatha (either still there or having just entered the real world) she is followed by 3 shadows that all connect to her feet as if they were each her shadow but they shoot off in different directions. She hears them behind her and stops. The shadows move and shrink quickly on the ground toward Adiana. Our POV changes to Adiana who turns around and sees only her own shadow. (the idea here is that the shadows are hiding in her own shadow, taking on the shape of Adiana and hiding in the same space.)
